Though there are plenty of great places to get out and enjoy the outdoors in Vermont this summer, arguably one of our favorites is Fort Dummer State Park. Fort Dummer State Park is a great place to enjoy a hike or summer picnic, but it also has a fascinating history as the site of the first permanent European settlement in Vermont.
Fort Dummer State Park is just a 10-minute drive from our Vermont Bed and Breakfast. While there are plenty of excellent and challenging hikes in Vermont’s Green Mountains, not everything must be a sweat-inducing adventure. We’re equally thrilled to send our guests to quiet, relaxing places where they can enjoy leisurely walks and charming afternoon picnics. Fort Dummer State Park is that place!
After your adventure, the quiet, restful guest rooms at our Vermont Bed and Breakfast will be waiting for you. Our gardens are a wonderful place to spend a quiet afternoon, and we’re just a short walk away from downtown Brattleboro when it’s time to grab a bite to eat.

An Afternoon at Fort Dummer State Park
Fort Dummer State Park is just a few minutes from our Vermont Bed and Breakfast, which makes it an easy place to get outside for some therapeutic time on the trails. That’s not the only reason to visit, though. Fort Dummer State Park is a fascinating piece of Brattleboro’s history, and it’s gorgeous.
Fort Dummer State Park offers visitors just over 200 acres of forested land to explore, making it a great place to escape the hot afternoon sun. Originally this land was the site of the first permanent European settlement in what is now the state of Vermont. This settlement, named Fort Dummer, was built in 1724 and ultimately provided essential protection for other nearby colonies and facilitated the growth of settlements along the Connecticut River.
The historic fort was destroyed in the early 1900s in a flood. Today, Fort Dummer State Park overlooks the site of the historic fort. A hike is the most popular thing to do at Fort Dummer State Park. The park has three main hiking trails, but the Sunrise Trail is the most popular. It’s a pretty short trail and considered easy for most visitors.
Fort Dummer State Park is also a great place to enjoy a picnic, surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Connecticut River Valley. We offer a fabulous handmade picnic package to take with you on your trip to Fort Dummer State Park. It includes A lovely fabric-lined picnic backpack for you to keep for future adventures, 1 Bottle of wine, 2 Wine glasses, a Waiter corkscrew, two cloth napkins, 2 Bottles of Vermont Spring water, and two delicious catered lunches.
