Not only can you drive through the beautiful river valleys and rural farmland that Vermont is so well known for, but you can enjoy Vermont scenic drives that take you up in the mountains for breathtaking views in every direction. After taking just one of these Vermont scenic drives, you’ll see why this is one of our favorite ways to explore the area each autumn.
Here are three of our favorite Vermont scenic drives near Brattleboro:
Molly Stark Scenic Byway (Route 9)
Route 9, the Molly Stark Scenic Byway, is a beautiful option for Vermont Scenic drives through Southern Vermont. In fact, it’s the southernmost scenic drive in Vermont. The Molly Stark Byway connects the towns of Brattleboro and Bennington, cutting through the picturesque Green Mountains along the way.
As you meander along the Molly Stark Scenic Byway, you’ll pass through lowland valleys, historic villages, busy downtowns, and the beautiful Green Mountains. You’ll even cross portions of the Long Trail and the Appalachian trail if you want to stop for a bit of hiking along the way! It won’t take long to see why we think this is one of the most beautiful Vermont scenic drives.
Points of interest include famous monuments, unique settlements (like Woodford, the highest village in Vermont), historic districts, hiking trails, state parks, winter sports centers, lakes, streams, and waterfalls. The drive is just under 40 miles and will take approximately one hour, depending on how much you stop.
Brattleboro to Mount Snow
Parts of this drive are considered one of the most spectacular Vermont scenic drives – and we think you’ll agree just as soon as you’ve covered these magnificent 100 miles. This route involves scenic route 100, which is considered by many to be one of the best fall foliage drives in New England – and that’s saying something!
This route will take you through some of the best scenery in the state and pass through some iconic places worth stopping to spend extra time. You could easily spend a few days exploring this one route! Included in this drive is Mount Snow, where you’re encouraged to get out and enjoy a fall foliage chairlift ride if nothing else.
Other highlights making this one of the best Vermont scenic drives include Jamaica State Park, the Vermont Country Store in Weston, Buttermilk Falls, Moss Glen Falls, and so much more.
The Connecticut River National Byway
The Connecticut River is one of New England’s longest and most powerful rivers, so it should be no surprise that one of the best Vermont scenic drives travels alongside (and over) it. The river cuts through the land between the stunning Green Mountains of Vermont and the White Mountains of New Hampshire – two of the most popular areas in the country to enjoy fall foliage in New England!
The Connecticut River National Byway is the only designated National Byway in Vermont. As you travel along this beautiful byway, you’ll encounter several museums, historic sites, and architecture, not to mention plenty of breathtaking natural beauty. This trip is about more than simply enjoying Vermont scenic drives; and is much more about getting to know the people and culture of Vermont through its history and deeply-rooted traditions.
